About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Fredericksburg, TX, Backwoods BBQ serves up a truly authentic Texas barbecue experience that’s nothing short of soul-satisfying. As a premier barbecue restaurant, Backwoods BBQ offers a menu brimming with smoky, tender, and juicy meats that capture the essence of classic American BBQ in every bite.

Patrons rave about the 3 Meat Plate, featuring pork ribs, brisket, and tri-tips that practically melt in your mouth. The brisket, in particular, is a standout—a perfect balance of tenderness and a peppery crust that locks in deep, smoky flavors. The ribs are legendary for falling off the bone, each bite delivering that smoky, caramelized bark that true barbecue lovers crave. If you’re after something with a bold kick, the jalapeño sausage is a spicy, cheesy showstopper that perfectly complements the rich, smoky meats.

But Backwoods BBQ isn’t just about the meat. The sides are equally noteworthy, elevating the experience to something truly memorable. Creamed corn and buttery green beans, paired with their famously indulgent macaroni and cheese or classic potato salad, provide a comforting, home-cooked feeling that keeps guests coming back. One can’t help but fall in love with the golden, buttery creamed corn—a little sweetness balanced with silky texture that feels like a warm embrace on a plate.

The dining atmosphere is casual and inviting with a generous, spacious setting that makes both dine-in and takeout a breeze. Friendly staff guide you through the menu, and the carved meats at the counter come accompanied by barbecue sauces that honestly seem almost unnecessary—because the meat is that good on its own. Many visitors, like Jim Waldo, note how the smoky, tender qualities of the brisket stand up beautifully without sauce, truly showcasing the meat’s quality and expert preparation.

Backwoods BBQ perfectly captures the spirit of Texas barbecue, where every plate is an indulgent, flavor-packed getaway. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Fredericksburg, this is the kind of place you’ll find yourself craving again and again. As Mason Martin puts it, the food is "soulhealing, fingerlicking, don’ttalktomeI’meating kind of BBQ," and after just one meal here, you’ll understand exactly why.

Let me just say this: Backwoods BBQ knows exactly what they’re doing. Like… soul-healing, finger-licking, don’t-talk-to-me-I’m-eating kind of BBQ. The brisket? Tender. Juicy. Basically melts like butter if butter had a smoky, peppery crust. The ribs? Fall-off-the-bone legends. And the corn? Look, I don’t know what magic they sprinkled on it, but I’d drive back just for that golden, buttery goodness. Legit A-MAIZE-ING. Service? Friendly doesn’t even cover it — everyone there treats you like you’ve been coming for years. It's that small-town “you’re family now” vibe that makes the food taste even better. Seriously, everything was on point. No weak spots. No complaints. No crumbs left on the plate. If you're rolling through Fredericksburg and skip Backwoods BBQ, you're doing Texas wrong.

Truly delicious! We had the brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, and jalapeno sausage. Everything was wonderful, the jalapeno sausage is a showstopper. The place is very large, and the service was quick. We got ours to go.

Order at counter - take food to table. Person who carved meat very helpful. Food was great - we were given BBQ sauce on side and all of us preferred the meat without. Meat was tender and moist and smoky! If we lived near here we would be regulars!

The best BBQ I’ve ever tasted. Even my father, a seasoned BBQ taster, put it in his top 5 all time. Great meat, the rub was killer, and the sides were incredible. Don’t delay, go here, do not miss this place!

Firstly, the cuisine is exceptional. The service is outstanding and the ambiance is remarkably relaxing, reminiscent of a backyard barbecue with family. The cashier, Nik, is exceptionally courteous and ensures that orders are accurate and delivered promptly. Today, I ordered two servings of the lulling sausage plate, which comes with potato salad, beans, pickles, onions, and barbecue sauce. It is highly recommended to visit Backwoods Barbecue, located at the intersection of East Commerce and Hackberry Street.
